Southern California Lifeguarding/WSI Course Schedule

This page lists the American Red Cross courses scheduled in Southern California by Water Safety Guy. Only Lifeguarding, LIfeguarding Instructor, and WSI courses are regularly scheduled below. For other courses, see  the Anytime-Anywhere Courses page.

Lifeguarding (LG) fact sheet

COURSE # UCI2012-LG1 (New Program)

  • Course Dates/Times: April 13-15, 2012, from 5-9p F/8a to 7p Sa/Su
  • Location: UCI Campus Rec Center, Irvine, CA
  • Prerequisites:15 years old on the last day of the course; able to swim 300 yards (12 lengths of a 25-yard pool) using the front crawl or breaststroke or both in any combination; able to tread water for 2 minutes using legs only; and able to swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10-lb weight from 7-10 feet, swim with it 20 yards using legs only, and remove it and yourself from the water without using steps or a ladder in 100 seconds or less.

Lifeguarding Instructor (LGI) r.12 fact sheet (bottom of p. 2)

COURSE # SS2012-LGI1 (New Program)

  • Course Dates/Times: March 24-25, 2012, from 8:00a to 6:00p each day.
  • Location: SafeSwim, Irvine, CA. FLYER
  • Prerequisites: At least 17 years old with current Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certificates or equivalent. Must be able to challenge Lifeguarding (r.12), including a continuous 300 swim using front crawl/breaststroke, a 2-minute tread w/legs only, and a 20-yard timed swim with retrieval of a 10-lb weight and 20-yard tow w/legs only. Must complete an online orientation to the Red Cross and the course BEFORE the first class meeting.
  • Cost: $160 for course and digital textbooks (hard-copy textbooks are additional).
  • To Register: Go to the SafeSwim web site to register online. Following registration, you will receive instructions for downloading digital textbooks and completing online work.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) fact sheet

COURSE # SS2012-WSI1, -WSI2, -WSI3

  • Course Dates/Times:
    • Course #1: April 27-29, 2012.
    • Course #2: May 25-27, 2012.
    • Course #3: June 8-10, 2012.
    • Times for Each Course: 5 to 9p Fri/8a to 6p Sat/Sun.
  • Location: SafeSwim, Irvine, CA. FLYER
  • Prerequisites: At least 16 years old; able to swim front crawl, back crawl, elementary back, sidestroke, breaststroke, and butterfly in good form; and tread water and back float for 1 minute each.
